Our Meetings
In 1987, I'd spoken publicly to large audiences but still had stage fright. I joined Toastmasters to feel more comfortable in front of audiences, but ended up learning much more. In the last 20 years, Toastmasters has taught me to listen better and to become a better thinker, both of which have helped me to achieve faster and more productive results.

Evaluations

Vapor Trails Toastmasters meets every Monday from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Tierrasanta Recreation Center. Guests are always welcome.

Each week, we work on our communication and leadership skills by participating in a meeting where we learn and practice various speaking techniques in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Each meeting contains at least one formal speech by a club member, an evaluation of the speech by another member, and the chance for everyone to practice speaking off-the-cuff.

Speeches:

At least one member presents a speech based on a project in one of Toastmasters Communication and Leadership manuals at every meeting. Toastmasters provides information and training on techniques such as gestures and speech organization, while the person speaking decides on the topic. Speeches can be silly or serious, and give members a chance to practice skills and get to know each other in a friendly, supportive environment.

Evaluations:

Every speech is given an oral evaluation by a fellow member. Toastmasters evaluations are helpful, motivating, and constructive, letting the speaker know what she did well and suggesting areas in which to improve. Every evaluator prepares a written evaluation for the speaker, and all members are encouraged to submit short written comments to the speaker. Evaluations are designed to be both useful and encouraging.

Table Topics:

In this segment, members not otherwise scheduled as program participants have an opportunity to present one-to two-minute impromptu talks on various topics.

The idea behind a Toastmasters meeting is that every person gets a chance to practice speaking at every meeting if he or she wants to.
